Cleaning & pressing comics – what’s behind it?

The so-called “Clean & Press” is a crucial step for collectors and investors who want to sustainably improve the condition and thus the value of their comics – especially before a professional evaluation by CGC, CBCS or other grading service providers.

🔍 What does “cleaning” mean?

During dry cleaning, the surface of the comic is carefully cleaned of:

  • slight traces of dirt,
  • fingerprints,
  • Grease stains or
  • Surface discoloration

without the use of liquids or chemicals. This is done using special, archival-friendly materials and tools. The goal is to visually enhance the cover without damaging it.

📏 What is “pressing”?

During pressing , the comic is flattened under controlled conditions (heat and pressure).

  • curtsy,
  • slight wrinkles,
  • wavy pages (e.g. due to moisture)

largely removed. The structure of the paper is stabilized, and the comic looks significantly "fresher" and of higher quality.

🎯 Why is Clean & Press worth it?

  • Increase in value : Many comics gain 1-2 grading levels after the Clean & Press, which significantly increases their market value.
  • Preservation : This is a conservation intervention – not a repair, but a maintenance.
  • Preparation for CGC Grading : A well-prepared comic has a better chance of receiving a high grade.
